Gifts for Wife

An anniversary carries the most pressure and usually the smallest answer: a letter written by hand, a redo of the first date, a piece of jewelry chosen because of something she said in passing rather than something she pinned. Husbands tend to overspend and notice too little, and the reverse works better.

Christmas asks something else, since the gift sits under the tree beside everything else she opens and the household budget is already stretched thin. That is the year for whatever she has quietly been doing without: a proper robe, the good skincare she rations, a hobby restarted with real supplies, a weekend booked for February when nothing else is happening.

Mother’s Day is its own trap for a husband, because the day belongs to her as a mother and she often spends it doing the mothering. What lands is time plus something she picked herself: a morning off with no negotiating, a meal she did not plan or clean up after, and one thing that is hers rather than the family’s. Across all three, the practical move is keeping a running note through the year of what she mentions offhand, so nothing has to be invented in December.
